A YOUNG father died and his two-year-old son was seriously injured when they were hit by a car fleeing from a theft at a nearby supermarket.

Bryan Hardwick, 26, of Proudfoot Drive, Woodhouse Close Estate, Bishop Auckland, was returning from collecting conkers with his two children, Liam, two, and Brogan, three, and a group of friends when the car ploughed into them on the Bishop Auckland bypass.

Close friend David Weatherburn, 40, was also seriously injured in the accident, which happened as the group waited to cross the A688 at a traffic island near the junction with South Church Industrial Estate.

At 4.50pm on Saturday a white Rover 45, travelling south-west towards the Aldi roundabout, swerved off the road, hitting Mr Weatherburn and Mr Hardwick, who was pushing Liam in a pushchair.

The car then struck a small tree before careering into a ditch at the side of the road.

A police spokeswoman said last night: “It is believed that shortly before the incident the occupants of the vehicle were involved in a theft at the Asda supermarket in South Church Road, Bishop Auckland.”

Mr Hardwick had taken Liam and Brogan to collect conkers at a nearby cemetery next to the River Gaunless.

He was with Mr Weatherburn, Mark Elliot, his 11-yearold son, Aaron, and his friend, Paul Jordan, also 11.

Last night, Mr Elliot said that a car had slowed down to allow the group to cross to the traffic island in the middle of the road, but the white Rover overtook it and hit the two men and the pushchair.

Eyewitnesses, who said the car was not being pursued by police at the time, said that two people who had been in the front seats of the car ran off south towards the River Gaunless.

The two passengers in the back seats had to be cut free by firefighters.

Mr Hardwick was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, but died later from his injuries.

Liam suffered head injuries and was taken by the Great North Air Ambulance to The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

Last night, doctors described his condition as serious but stable. Mr Weatherburn, also from Bishop Auckland, is in Darlington Memorial Hospital, where his condition was described as serious.

A 14-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man, who were in the back of the car, were taken to Newcastle General Hospital and The James Cook University Hospital, respectively, with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. Kenneth Clarey, who lives in Shawbrow Road, near where the accident happened, said: “I was in my back garden and I heard the bang, so I went to look over the fence.

“I could not see a car, because it would have been down in the ditch.

“All I could see was a pushchair and a plastic bag full of conkers on the side of the road. There were people on the phone and some cars had pulled over.

“Within a matter of seconds there were police and ambulances, so you have to give them praise for a really, really quick response.”

Two Bishop Auckland men, a 26- year-old and an 18-year-old, have been arrested in relation to the incident.

Mr Hardwick was engaged to Liam and Brogan’s mother, 21-year-old Kayleigh Sanderson, who yesterday described her fiance as “a loving father who lived for his children”.

Detective Inspector Billy Hugill said: “I would urge anyone who saw this vehicle travelling between South Church Road and the scene of the collision on the bypass between the roundabout at St Andrew’s Church and the Kwik Save (now Aldi) roundabout to contact us.”

The A688 was closed for several hours to allow invesigators to examine the scene.

Police also cordoned off a 300-metre stretch of grass between the A688 and Shawbrow Road to allow police helicopters and the Great North Air Ambulance to land.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0345-60-60-365 or the accident investigations unit on 0191-375-2159.

i just want to say that i was up most of the night talking to a very very close family friend. who was keeping me informed these people are friends of mine. When the phone call came there were tears. the other person on the phone was crying and i didnt know what to say. they were with some of the family members. i am sending my condolences to you all. it is so unfair, and makes me feel physically sick. i left another post on the other news section to this. and it is about time that the idiots were all pictured, named and shamed, this is woodhouse close, everyone know's everyone you cant expect to get away with something like this, surely guilt would kick in. but people who do tis kind of thing dont have a heart never mind a brian cell. I didnt know byran very well, but i know whenever i saw him he was with his kids. and now kayleigh has to remind her children everytime they ask where is daddy, when is he coming home she has to tell them the same thing over and over again. Because of cruel sick, people. Justice should be done this time life for a life. No one is perfect in life, we all do things we regret, we all live life the way we choose. But you dont choose to drive a car, no tax, insurance, under the influence of substance, alochol or drugs, steal a car, drive like a nutter and loose control, take off from the scene, that is by choice no one makes you do it, and in the process of this stupidity, a life was unfairly taken away from 2 little children, a devoted partner, and family and friends. Liam is a little star, and fighter and he will shine through for his daddy, I still cant get my head around it, you hear about things like this all the time but you never expect it to be people you are close to, people you know, and live close too. Nothing i can say will take the pain away. im sending prayers galore for you all. And i think now the whole estate wants justice for this crime. before anymore innocent people are killed so that others can have there 5 minutes of fun of thinking they are untouchable. to the family and friends of bryan, dave and liam and everyone else who was there at the time who saw it happen and everytime they close their eyes feels helpless that they couldnt prevent it. i send my love to you all. Sleep tight bryan let the angels guide you to watch over your family. xxx

As a nurse, driving past the scene 10 mins after it happened I was tempted 2 stop but rescue services were in full-swing. For a family 2 lose a member all for a crate of stolen beer is despicable and if the courts fail this family (as we have seen time and time again) then I am sure that the culprits will be ostracised from their community for this abysmal crime. There is no excuse at all for what they have done.
Hats off to rescue services for a marvellous job.
Thoughts and prayers to the decent families involved.

G4TYF Gurney Valley

This tradgic news yet Highlights the need for an underpass which would cater for disabled, the elderly, and for the parents and children who have to cross this busy road almost every day, to my knowlege this is the second fatality on this particular location, the previous been a little girl, my family went to school with brian and they are all deeply shocked, how many more innocent lives are to be taken away before some sort of action is taken to protect the public on this stretch of road which has a daily increasing number of traffic .

Condolences to the family and a speedy recovery for Liam.

Such a tragic accident to inocent people out with their family collecting conkers. It appears to be common knowledge that the driver lives in Bishop Auckland and has a history of theft etc. The young family will be devistated and my thoughts go out to them including David who is also seriously injured.
The local Church on Proudfoot Drive I understand is to be open on FRIDAY to enable family ,friends etc to have a time of prayer and reflection on this tragic accident.

I have also written on another article linked to this, its time people stood as one to get rid of these people who do not think twice about carrying out such stupid acts, this will be a family torn apart, and two beautiful children without their dad, it cannot get any worse, my thought to the family and to the little one, so many people are thinking of you at this time.
