Win Trees

This photography competition gives young people the chance to meet one of the North-East’s leading photographers, to see their pictures published in a highprofile Green manifesto and to be inspired by David Bellamy, who will join them and help them to plant their trees in an unforgettable ecological lesson.

Young people aged between eight and 16 can enter the competition by sending us a photograph that demonstrates their passion for the environment.

HOW TO ENTER
Either attach your photo to the form at the bottom of the page and enter your details or send a print to Tree Appeal Competition, The Northern Echo, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF. Make sure to include your name, age and address, a caption giving details about where the picture was taken, and the location where you would like your trees planted. Closing date is Friday, August 1. Usual Newsquest (North-East) rules apply. The judges’ decision is final.
The North- East and North Yorkshire is blessed with wonderful scenery and your pictures could include a favourite landscape that captures the stunning environment of the region and its importance to us. It could also be on a smaller scale, perhaps a view you admire in a park, a garden or at your home. This could include your wildlife, people, buildings and, of course, your favourite trees.

The entries could also demonstrate or reflect work on a specific project you are undertaking, or are interested in, that relates to the environment or to climate change. This could be through a school or community project.

Our judges will select three winners to share the 100 trees, which can be planted at a school or a church hall, a village hall or a Scout hall, or on a local recreation area or green area.

Our trees have been given by Tree Appeal, a company near Bishop Auckland, that has planted 100,000 trees in the past five years on behalf of big names like Sainsbury’s, Abbey and Sherwoods garage. Tree Appeal plants only native broad-leaved trees to help replace the 40 per cent of woodland that has been lost in the past 75 years. Tree Appeal believes in creating woodland habitats to help stitch our world back together again. Its patron is David Bellamy, who will help judge the entries.

Joe Cornish is another of our judges. He has photographic galleries in Stokesley and Northallerton, where he displays his superb pictures of our landscape bathed in beautiful light. The picture (left) shows Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland and is taken from Joe’s new book The Northumberland Coast (Frances Lincoln Ltd, £14.99). He believes the power of photography can have a positive influence on the environmental debate. He will meet our winning photographers to inspire them further.

A third judge is Councillor Mick Henry, chair of the Association of North East Councils, the political voice for local government in the North-East. Coun Henry is a former senior lecturer in photography at Northumbria. The association will publish some of the best entries in its Green Manifesto, which will be launched later this year and seen by some of the most influential people in the land. All the entries will feature in a gallery on The Northern Echo's awardwinning website – northernecho.co.uk. Send in your entry and make sure you check the gallery regularly to see the competition you are up against.
